Painting of My Father (1979),

photo taken in 2023

I painted my father, Dr. Glenn Gordon, in 1979, using a picture from an article in the Eugene Register Guard. Here he reflects on his visit as a surgeon exploring medical care in military and civilian hospitals in South Vietnam. He was a life long learner and willing to be changed.

Every painting has a back story.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, in Oregon.

I feel the presence of the people who were here before, who also loved our mountains, rivers and trees.

This place, this earth, is our only home, and it is at risk of becoming uninhabitable.

I explore images which represent my personal journey and lived experience as well as images which reflect my interpretation of our individual and collective battles with the forces of creation and destruction, with the life-affirming and the life-destroying. They can be totally abstract or include recognizable imagery.

My formal education consists of bachelors degrees in Art Education from the University of Oregon and Painting from the Museum Art School, now the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Later I earned a masters in Public Administration from Portland State University.

I was able to give 30 years to Portland Public Schools as a volunteer, advocate, and activist, from the classrooms to the policy rooms to our legislators in Salem. I learned the concepts of Saul Alinsky’s community organizing and political activism became my passion, with others helping to build community involvement and strengthen democracy and work for positive change.

Making art and having it in our spaces is life affirming, connecting us to the creative spirit of our ancestors. We need that creative spirit as we re-imagine and re-create our shared future on our beautiful planet.
