48” x 48” x 2”, Oil on Stretched Canvas
I love the oil paint itself, the smell of it, mixing colors and adding medium until it is just right. I get to use all of myself - my body as I make and move, my emotions as I react to it, my mind as I reflect on it and decide what to do next. The dance between me and what is happening on the canvas.

Since the 60’s, I’ve been an involved citizen. There came a time when I was feeling deep conflict about how best to contribute to positive change in the larger community. I felt urgency to do what I could. I was worried about the city, and the planet. These were some of the last paintings I made before taking a 20-year hiatus, during which time I used my creativity as a community organizer and political activist.
The City that Works
Nature has saved me, over and over. It grounds me, calms me, inspires me, suggests strategies, allows me to feel and think and dream, to find solace. Rocks and trees, flowers, water, mountains, fields. Lakes and oceans. My back yard. The seasons. All living beings. This beautiful, amazing planet.
Water Energy
All over this world there were people before us. Tribes to civilizations. The Incan Empire was one. Wiped out by the Spanish invasion. I visited Cusco and Machu Picchu and felt the magic and heard the warnings.
Incan Message
From yearning for a child, to grief from the loss of one, and through solidarity with my sisters, I have found expression, sustenance, and healing through painting.

So often there isn’t an answer, or a clear one, anyway. Here is what I do know. There is beauty everywhere. Good people. Meaningful work to do!
I keep this on my wall because I need to hear it every day:
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and learn to love the questions themselves.” Rainier Maria Rilke
A painting can be like a question.
